California Regional Director

What We Are Looking For:

WestWater Research is seeking qualified applicants to lead our California office. The Regional Director position will be responsible for managing our existing California projects, supervising our California staff team, and leading business development efforts to grow the California practice of WestWater. The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of consulting or related experience in the subject areas of water rights, water transactions, water resource economics, and related water management fields. Specific and relevant experience in California is required, and experience with water rights and water resource management in other Western States is preferred. The position is ideally suited for water sector professionals who want to work in the exciting and growing field of water markets and water resource economics. The California Regional Director will be a subject matter expert and thought leader in California water markets.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Project Management and Execution: The Regional Director serves as the primary point of contact for clients in California and for projects outside of the state that may be assigned. The position leverages their subject matter expertise and project management capabilities to execute projects. For consulting projects, the Regional Director develops a work plan, identifies the WestWater team members and tasks necessary for completing the project, and collaborates with the team members to ensure that the requirements of the project scope are satisfied. In this project management capacity, the Regional Director also monitors project budgets and coordinates with clients to discuss budget adjustments when necessary.
  • Ensuring Quality and Timeliness of Client Deliverables: The Regional Director has primary responsibility for ensuring that client deliverables are high-quality and delivered on a timely basis. The Regional Director reviews draft work products from staff, which often includes providing constructive comments to the project team members and collaborating with the team members to address comments. The Regional Director will also be expected to perform a variety of work tasks and be able to fill in on any project tasks to ensure successful project completion.
  • Assisting with Project Work Tasks and Client Deliverables. In addition to project management, the Regional Director will also be responsible for contributing to project work flows by developing work plans and report outlines, conducting analyses, contributing to report writing, and assisting with the completion of other project tasks. This role is expected to contribute to new and existing projects, in addition to leading the California office.
  • Managing Contracts and Client Relationships: The Regional Director works with WestWater’s administrative and senior management staff to complete any contracting necessary for new client projects. The Regional Director also maintains existing client relationships for active and past projects by responding to inquiries and proactively conducting outreach and engagement activities.
  • Developing New Clients and Business Opportunities. The Regional Director will assist and actively contribute to the development of new clients and business development opportunities in order to grow and expand our presence in California and other Western U.S. states. This may include drafting a business development plan, organizing and preparing for individual meetings with prospective clients, attending and speaking at conferences and other events, drafting proposals, responding to RFPs, and developing relationships in the California water and business community.
  • Thought Leadership and Relationship Development: In coordination with WestWater’s principals, the Regional Director will develop and execute a plan for establishing themselves and the firm as thought leaders in the California market. These activities include authoring publications, participating in panel discussions, presenting at conferences, and organizing workshops periodically. In addition, the Regional Director builds and maintains a broad professional network in their region.
  • Management and Oversight of California Staff: The Regional Director provides day-to-day management, oversight, and mentorship to California staff. Specific activities include providing review/feedback on work products, providing guidance and support with time management, establishing performance targets and tracking against those targets, collaborating with the team on thought leadership activities, and participating in formal review meetings. In addition, the Regional Director will periodically organize team-building events.

WestWater Research is an economic consulting firm providing water market research, water resource economics, water rights consulting, and financial and investment services to a diverse client base. Our standard services include water rights valuations, advising on water transactions, economic analysis of water related policies and projects, and water rights due-diligence investigations. Since its inception in 2001, WestWater Research has received national recognition for its valuation practice and advising on complex water market and trading issues across every Western State. The firm continues to grow and is seeking a motivated and energetic manager to grow with the company.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in one of the following fields:

– Agricultural, Resource, or Applied Economics

– Masters of Business Administration, Finance, or related field

– Civil, Agricultural, or Environmental Engineering

– Natural Resource Science

– Other water-related fields

  • Demonstrated experience in water rights and water resource management in California.
  • Understanding of water management regulatory frameworks and processes in California.
  • An extensive water industry network across California
  • Knowledge of California water supply projects, distribution networks, and water districts.
  • Knowledge of contemporary water policies and water management initiatives in California.
  • Knowledge of financial and economic analyses.
  • 5+ years of experience in water rights and water resources management in California
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in water rights and water resource management in California.
  • Prior consulting experience.
  • Past work experience and relationships with agricultural and municipal water districts and agencies in California.
  • Past work experience on water transfers and transactions of water entitlements in California.
  • An extensive water industry network across California and other Western states.
  • Experience managing and directing staff to complete complex water resources projects.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and in a team environment to drive results.
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and investigative skills.
  • Ability to present complex data in a simplified and meaningful way.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and creativity to resolve complex issues.

Location: The position will be located in the Sacramento, California office of WestWater. An alternative location in California may be considered on an individual case basis, however, a regular presence in Sacramento is strongly preferred.

Compensation:

The Regional Director is a salaried position within WestWater and offers a comprehensive compensation package including health benefits, 401k retirement plan, and an opportunity for annual bonus and company profit sharing. The salary for this position will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications, with an expected base salary range of $120,000 to $180,000.
