California Regional Director

We’re looking for a Water Leader to head up our California office!

We’re seeking a highly motivated Regional Director to lead our California office. You’ll play a key role in managing our existing projects, providing expert guidance to our California staff, and driving business growth in the state. This is an exciting opportunity for a water sector professional to become a prominent thought leader in California’s dynamic water market.

Position Responsibilities: Leading California Operations and Growth

  • Project Leadership: Manage and execute water management projects, from scope definition and team selection to delivery and budget oversight. You’ll be the key client contact, ensuring high-quality deliverables and timely completion.
  • Technical Expertise: Contribute to projects with your in-depth knowledge of water rights, transactions, economics, and resource management.
  • Client Relationships: Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients in California and beyond. Develop new business opportunities through proposals, presentations, and industry engagement.
  • Thought Leadership: Become a recognized expert in the California water market. Collaborate with leadership to develop thought leadership initiatives like publications, presentations, and workshops.
  • Team Management: Provide day-to-day leadership and mentorship to the California staff. Foster a collaborative environment, set performance goals, and offer guidance for professional development.

WestWater Research is an economic consulting firm providing water market research, water resource economics, water rights consulting, and financial and investment services to a diverse client base. Our standard services include water rights valuations, advising on water transactions, economic analysis of water related policies and projects, and water rights due-diligence investigations. Since its inception in 2001, WestWater Research has received national recognition for its valuation practice and advising on complex water market and trading issues across every Western State.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in one of the following fields relevant to water management:
    • Agricultural, Resource, or Applied Economics
    • Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on Water Resources or Environmental Management
    • Civil, Agricultural, or Environmental Engineering with a water resources specialization
    • Natural Resource Science with a focus on water management
    • Other water-related fields (e.g., Water Policy, Hydrology)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in water rights, water transactions, water resource economics, or related water management fields, with a demonstrated focus on California.
  • Proven expertise in California water management:
    • Strong understanding of California’s water rights and resource management regulatory frameworks and processes.
    • In-depth knowledge of California water supply projects, distribution networks, and water districts.
    • Familiarity with contemporary water policies and water management initiatives in California.
  • Financial and economic analysis skills: Ability to apply financial and economic principles to water management projects.
  • Leadership and mentorship experience: Proven ability to provide effective day-to-day management, oversight, and mentorship to staff, including experience with direct reports.
  • Communication skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills to collaborate effectively with clients, colleagues, and industry stakeholders.
  • Location: Currently located in California or willing to relocate for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive California Water Management Experience:
    • 10+ years of experience in water rights, water transactions, water resource economics, or related water management fields, with a demonstrated focus on California.
    • Proven track record of successfully managing complex water resources projects.
    • Past work experience and strong relationships with agricultural and municipal water districts and agencies in California.
    • Prior experience with water transfers and transactions of water entitlements in California.
  • Strong Leadership and Communication Skills:
    • Experience managing and directing staff to achieve project goals.
    • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively to drive results.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills to engage with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
    • Ability to present complex data in a clear and compelling way.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Expertise:
    • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and investigative skills.
    • Ability to apply knowledge and creativity to solve complex water management challenges.
  •  Industry Network and Location:
    • An established network of contacts within the California water industry (and potentially other Western states).
    • Located in or able to regularly commute to Sacramento.

Compensation:

The base salary range for this full-time position is $153,000-$244,000 + bonus + 401k profit sharing + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Your contact at WestWater can share more about the specific salary range during the hiring process.
